This is the trail’s seventh year. Tickets are on sale now (The Culture Trust launch release, 5 October 2026).

What is there
The trail is just over 1km. New this year, according to The Culture Trust:
- Storybook Gardens: the walled gardens turned into familiar stories, with a wardrobe to peer through into Narnia, a yellow brick road, a gingerbread house and the Little Mermaid.
- Wheels in Motion: a corridor of hundreds of suspended bicycle wheels that light up and spin as children walk through, made with Stockwood’s onsite artist Penrose.
- The TeePee Tree: a circle of mirrored panels with three-dimensional sound moving around you and overhead lights following the beat.
Coming back: the Naughty or Nice Santa Scanner, and Cedric the talking tree with a new story. Along the way there are floodlit birch trees, sparkling reindeer, a fairy-light tunnel and synchronised lighting. Children can make fountains dance to music, start an illuminated tractor and change their voices in the Sound Shack.

The trail finishes on Stockwood’s bottom lawn, where lights, lasers, projections and thousands of colour-changing bulbs are set to a festive soundtrack.

Before and after the trail:
- A new Christmas Village with food from Street Food Heroes: Dough with the Flow (pizza), So Solid Sando (fried chicken), Toastielicious (burgers), Emilios (Lebanese shawarma) and Churro Boyz (churros). There is also a bar, grab-and-go refreshments, Christmas craft traders, Stockwood’s Christmas shop, marshmallow toasting and lawn games for children.
- The Garden Café open for hot chocolate, mulled wine and other drinks, and indoor spaces to warm up.
- The museum galleries are closed during the evening event.
The Culture Trust says visitors in past years took 45 minutes to an hour to walk the trail; it will confirm this year’s length nearer the time. The trail runs in rain and cold, and every path is wheelchair accessible. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters can be borrowed by booking ahead on 01582 548600 (Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm).

Amy Belson, chief executive of The Culture Trust, said: “At the heart of Stockwood Illuminated is the simple idea of bringing people together through light. We’ve put a lot of thought into making this year’s experience even more special for families, with more for visitors to interact with along the trail. We can’t wait to see Stockwood transformed again and to welcome families from Luton and beyond this Christmas.”
The Culture Trust is a Luton charity, and money from the event supports its work at the five cultural sites it runs in the town: Stockwood Discovery Centre, Wardown House Museum & Gallery, The Hat Factory Arts Centre, Hat House and Hat Works.
