Luton roadworks: Hatters Way works run to mid-October

One scheme is disrupting Luton traffic more than any other this summer: the rebuild of the Hatters Way and Chaul End Lane roundabout, which Luton Borough Council started on Monday 29 June 2026 and expects to run for 16 weeks, taking it into mid-October.

A second decision is due within days. The council’s recommendations for Bury Park, including an 18-month trial red route, went to its Overview and Scrutiny Board on 27 July and the Executive is due to make the final call this month.

What is happening now

Hatters Way and Chaul End Lane

The junction is being rebuilt rather than resurfaced, so the disruption lasts. The council’s scheme adds a dedicated left turn from Hatters Way into Chaul End Lane, signal-controlled crossings on Hatters Way and Dallow Road, a new shared pedestrian and cycle footway on the western arm of the roundabout, and a modified bus lay-by on Dallow Road. Overnight closures between 8pm and 5am, Monday to Friday, were used in the first week. The council’s own line is blunt: “There will inevitably be some disruption while these improvements are carried out.”

Bury Park

The council published its recommendations on 16 July 2026 after technical work and a public consultation held in autumn 2025. The headline proposals are an 18-month trial red route with a three-minute grace period, removing parked cars from around formal crossing points, footway parking restrictions, and 120 parking spaces at Luton Town Football Club made available except on matchdays. Loading bay hours would extend from 7pm to 7am out to 7pm to 10am, with the maximum stay rising from 30 to 45 minutes, and disabled bay stays would go from 60 to 90 minutes. A one-way system on Kenilworth Road is no longer recommended. If the Executive approves it, the council has proposed reviews after six and twelve months.

The M1 at junction 10

Junction 10 is the main motorway access for Luton and the airport, and it is where most of the overnight motorway work in this area lands. National Highways’ closure report for the week of 7 to 13 August 2026 listed the northbound junction 10 exit slip road closed from 22:00 to 05:00 on Wednesday 12 and Thursday 13 August, as part of a wider scheme covering the northbound carriageway between junctions 8 and 10. Nothing was listed at junction 11.

Junction 10 is also a long-term problem the council has already named. Its draft Local Transport Plan 5 lists “increasing capacity at M1 Junction 10 with National Highways to support airport expansion” as a longer-term priority, alongside Vauxhall Way corridor improvements and an access road for the airport business park. Parking in Luton

Council car park prices are lower than most towns on this line, and the overnight rate is the detail worth knowing.

A weekly permit for Crawley Road is £25, a month is £85 and a year is £1,000, with fixed-day annual permits from £477 for two days a week. Payment across the council’s car parks is by PayByPhone or by telephone on 01582 851 141; you need the location ID, which is 802301 for Crawley Road.

Chapel Viaduct car park 1 in the town centre is the trap. It is a private car park Monday to Friday and only opens to the public at weekends and on bank holidays, when Saturday parking runs from £1.50 for an hour to £5.20 for five hours and Sunday is £2 all day. Turning up on a Tuesday will not work.

The council also runs small car parks, most of them open 24 hours, at Beech Hill, Birch Link, Bramingham Road, Brunswick Street, Hitchin Road, Mostyn Road and Round Green.

Parking at the stations

If you are driving to the train rather than into town, the three station car parks hold 824 spaces at Luton Airport Parkway, 753 at Luton and 376 at Leagrave. Fares and journey times from each are in Luton train times to London.

Buses and the guided busway

Luton’s most distinctive piece of transport infrastructure is the Luton to Dunstable guided busway. The council counts six miles of dedicated busway inside the borough, with nine bus routes providing 18 buses an hour along it. Because it is segregated from traffic, it is the one corridor in the town that roadworks like the Hatters Way scheme do not slow down, which makes it the sensible fallback while that junction is being rebuilt.

The council’s draft Local Transport Plan proposes going further, with feasibility studies on extending the busway to Leighton Buzzard and other centres, and a target of a bus every five minutes along the core route.

For the airport, the Luton DART runs from Luton Airport Parkway station to the terminal in four minutes, 24 hours a day, at £4.90 for an adult single.
