A Leagrave Road halal butcher was rated 0 and five more Luton food businesses got a 1 in August. All 42 results, and why September's are not yet complete.
A halal butcher and fishmonger on Leagrave Road has been given a food hygiene rating of zero, the lowest possible. Five more Luton food businesses were rated 1 after inspections in August.
The results come from the Food Standards Agency’s national register, read on 5 October 2026 and filtered to Luton Council as the inspecting authority.
In our July roundup we warned that August looked flawless only because low ratings are published later. That is how it turned out. Nineteen August results were visible on 3 September, all of them 5s. There are now 42, and 20 of them are below a 5.
The August results in full
- 22 businesses were rated 5, “very good”
- 6 were rated 4, “good”
- 4 were rated 3, “generally satisfactory”
- 4 were rated 2, “improvement necessary”
- 5 were rated 1, “major improvement necessary”
- 1 was rated 0, “urgent improvement necessary”
The zero
Sadiyya halal meat and fish bazaar, a shop at 194 Leagrave Road, LU3 1JD, was inspected on 18 August 2026.
A rating is worked out from three marks, and a higher mark is worse. Sadiyya was given:
- 15 for food hygiene and safety procedures
- 20 for the structure and cleanliness of the premises
- 20 for confidence in management
Those add up to 55. Under the FSA’s scoring, any total above 50 means a zero.
The five rated 1
| Business | Address | Inspected |
|---|---|---|
| Spud Kingz (mobile caterer) | Luton Retail Park, LU1 3JH | 7 August |
| Pizza GoGo (Luton) | 15 Windsor Street, LU1 3UA | 11 August |
| Salkaara Kitchen, also trading as Shawaya mandhi house | 314-318 Selbourne Road, LU4 8NU | 11 August |
| You Want Beef? | 154 Dunstable Road, LU1 1EW | 11 August |
| VS Food and Wine | 22 Chaul End Lane, LU4 8EZ | 22 August |
All five scored 20 for confidence in management. That mark reflects how well a business records and controls its own food safety. A score that high on its own caps the rating at 1.
The four rated 2
- Arabella Lounge, the rooftop cafe at Nadeem Plaza, 172 Dunstable Road, LU4 8FG (13 August)
- L & D News, 799 Dunstable Road, LU4 0HW (13 August)
- Express News Ltd, 62 Park Street, LU1 3ET (28 August)
- Runley Mini Market, 311 Dallow Road, LU1 1TF (29 August)
Three of the four are newsagents or convenience shops, which shows the scheme covers far more than restaurants.
The four rated 3 were HELLOANDHARA Limited on Guildford Street, Hockwell Ring Butchers on The Green, Prime Supermarket on Dunstable Road and The Cake Family on Oak Road.
The good news
Twenty-two businesses earned the top mark. They include two care homes and a nursery, where hygiene matters most:
- Alicia Nursing Home
- St Anne’s Care Home
- Woodland Nursery
The Salvation Army, the Jolly Topers pub, Luton Conservative Club and the St Marys Church coffee pop-up were also rated 5. The full list is on the FSA register.
Their right to reply
None of the businesses above has published a response on the register. Under the scheme a business can appeal within 21 days of being told its rating. It can ask for a re-inspection once it has put things right, and it can publish a “right to reply” next to its rating. A rating is a snapshot of one visit, and several of these businesses may already have improved.
Why September looks perfect, for now
Thirty-two September ratings are on the register so far. All of them are 5s.
The reason is the same as last month. The FSA publishes a 5 as soon as it is uploaded, but anything lower is held back for at least 21 days so the business can appeal. Expect lower September ratings to appear through October.
The same delay has added to July. Eight more July results have appeared since our roundup, taking the month to 72. They include a 2 for Chai and Chapati, inspected on 30 July. Our July story said no business had been rated 2 that month, which was right on 3 September but is no longer the full picture.
Across the whole borough, five Luton food businesses currently hold a zero and 39 hold a 1. Of the 1,303 rated businesses on the register, 871 have a 5.
What it means for you
- Check before you order. Every rating is on the FSA website, and the links above go straight to each business’s entry.
- Businesses in England do not have to display their sticker, so a missing sticker tells you nothing. Look it up.
- If you think a business is breaking food safety rules, you can report it to the FSA, which passes it to Luton Council’s food safety team.
We will publish September’s results once the appeal window has passed.
